Hunsdon War Memorial Memorial Plaque St Dunstan’s Church, Hunsdon

Pre War

Born in 1891, in Bures, Suffolk, to parents John and Celia, he had five sisters and one brother John who also died in the war. In 1901 he was living with his family in Grundisburgh, Suffolk, and by 1911 they had moved to 3 & 4 March Cottages, Waltham Abbey, Essex, and like his father he was working on a farm as a cowman. At the time of his death he was shown as residing in Hunsdon and his parents were living in Pear Tree Cottage, Waltham Abbey.

Wartime Service

Enlisted in Hertford into 6th Battalion Beds. Regiment, who arrived in France on 30th July 1915. Spent part of that year in trenches near Bienvilliers, in July 1916 they were in trenches near Contalmaison as part of the Somme campaign, on July 10th they suffered 6 men killed and 4 missing, one of them being Edward.

Please note that the above is entered on the CWGC as Alliston he is entered on the war memorial as Ellison and the plaque as Elliston. The family name appears to start out as Allestone in 1891 but in 1991 his father signed as Alleston his brother John is
