Pre War

Frederick Flint was born in Berkhamsted in 1891, the son of Horace and Ellen Flint and baptised on 12 August 1893 in Berkhamsted along with sister Alice. He was one of seven children. 


On the 1901 Census Frederick was living with his grandparents, George and Annie Flint at 40 Kitsbury Road, Berkhamsted. His aunts Lily and Eva were also living there. By 1911 his grandfather had died and he was living with his widowed grandmother at the same address and working as a brush maker. 

He married Sarah Smith in the early summer of 1917 and they had a daughter, Eva in September 1917. They later lived at Orchard End Piece, Northchurch, Berkhamsted and 11 New Cottages, Northchurch, Berkhamsted. 

Wartime Service

Frederick enlisted in Berkhamsted and initially joined the Hertfordshire Regiment as Private 1362, later transferring to the 5th Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment.


He joined the Battalion when they were stationed in Egypt where they campaigned throughout the Gaza area.


Frederick died from pneumonia on 19 November 1918 in Palestine and is buried in the Deir el Belah War Cemetery, Palestine.

Additional Information

His widow Sarah received a war gratuity £20.  Pay owing of £28 13s 7d was divided between his widow (£9 11d 3d) and his daughter Eva (£19 2s 4d).


Sarah also received a pension of £1 0s 5d for herself and her daughter.
