Born on 2 Nov 1881 in Borodale, Wexford, Ireland son of David Longfield and Edith Katherine (Sadleir) Beatty. Educated at Haileybury College 1895-99. He fought in the Boer War between 1900 and 1902, with the 4th Battalion and 1st Mounted Infantry Battalion, Royal Warwickshire Regiment. He was Extra Aide-de-Camp to General Aldersen in 1901 and Superintendent of the Remount Department, Lahore and Baluchistan between 1911 and 1914. He gained the rank of Captain in the service of the 36th (Jacob's) Horse. He married Florence Mary Bywater of Hove, E. Sussex on 21 Oct 1907 and they had four children.

Wartime Service

He fought in the First World War between 1914 and 1915, on the North-West Frontier and Shabkardar.
