His father, Mr J.P. Gelas, was a ribbon manufacturer and his home was at 74, the Boulevard Gambetta, Nogent-sur-Marne, Seine Department, France.
Pierre was a Frenchman who attended Hitchin Grammar School from 1910-1912, he was remembered for his high spirits and vivacious laughter. He was one of the earliest boarders at the school.
He was born on the 9th September 1895 and had previously attended the Ecole Communale in Nogent-sur-Marne in the Seine Department of France. When he left school he joined his father's business.
He enlisted in the Seine 4e bureau (75) recruitment office as a soldier second class with the initial service number 3559.
Wartime Service
He was killed during the defence of Verdun. His place of death was Nogent-sur-Marne (94 - Val-de-Marne (ex Seine et Seine-et-Oise), France)
and was buried in Franerville Cemetery on the banks of the Meuse.
He was posthumously awarded the Croix de Guerre for conspicuous gallantry in action.
