Pre War

Born on 16 Aug 1890 and baptised on 9 Aug 1891 in Fulham, London son of William James and Bertha Mabel Chesterfield. Educated at the Royal Masonic School 1900-06. He became a shipping clerk and then, in 1916, Purser in the Union Castle Line. He married Mary Alice Walker in 1917 in Wandsworth and they lived in 169 Broomwood Road, Clapham Common, London.

Wartime Service

Served on transport ships carrying troops to East Africa and then when carrying repatriated POWs home across the North Sea he contracted pneumonia and died in hospital at Southampton.
