Born on 27 Mar 1889 in Singapore son of Swinford Leslie Thornton and Katharine Mary Matilda Gordon (Lumsden) Thornton of Grouville Court, Jersey. Educated at Haileybury College 1903-07 and Edinburgh University. Called to the Bar in Jun 1914 and joined a firm of solicitors in Penang.

Wartime Service

Joined the 16th Indian Cavalry on 25 Dec 1914 in Lucknow and proceeded to Basra on 3 Feb 1915. Moved to Bushire in July 1915 and was killed in a cavalry charge at Bushire.
