James Alfred Edward Dole was born about 1891, in Enfield, Middlesex, the son of Alfred Henry Dole a, Bricklayers Labourer and Roberta Eleanor Dole (nee Chambers-Youell. One of 11 children although 3 died in infancy.
1901 Census records James aged 10, living with his parents, 4 sisters and brother Alfred (8), at, (The Confectioners Shop) 85, Churchbury Road, Enfield, Middx, which was run by his mother.
In February 1909, James enlisted in the 1st Battalion, The Prince of Wales’s Leinster Regiment (Royal Canadians) with the service number 9016.
1911 James was still serving in the Army. The family were now living in St Jones’s Road, Goffs Lane, Cheshunt, Herts, They had 4 members of the Sawkins family boarding with them.
Wartime Service
At the outbreak of war James and the 1st Battalion, was stationed at Fyzabad (now Faizabad) in India.
The Battalion left Fyzabad on 11th October 1914, for Bombay (now Mumbai), from there they returned to England arriving at Plymouth, on 16th November 1914, and moved to Morn Hill Camp, Winchester, where they mobilized for war service joining the 82nd Brigade of the 27th Division.
On 19th December 1914, they embarked at Southampton aboard the SS “Lake Michigan” landing at Le Havre, France the following day the 20th. On 26th November 1915, the Battalion sailed for Salonika seeing action there.
In September 1917, the Battalion sailed for Raffa, Palestine, to prepare for the Palestine Campaign. James was Killed in Action on 27th December 1917.
Additional Information
His mother Roberta Dole received a Dependents Pension of 5/- a week from 6th November 1918, and his effects of £10-18s-9d, Pay Owing and his War Gratuity of £19-10s-00d.
