Pre War

Born on 5 Feb 1886 at St Mary at the Walls, Colchester son of Col. William and Lily Margaret Seymour (Jackson) Howard of Glebeside, Crowhurst, Sussex. Educated at Haileybury College 1898-1902. He later lived at East Lodge, Hastings Road, Bexhill on Sea, Sussex.

Wartime Service

Entered France in Aug 1914 with the 2nd Essex and was present at the retreat at Mons. He achieved his Flying Certificate at the Military School, Shoreham on 28 Aug 1915 and went on to command 18th Squadron, Royal Air Force. D.S.O. “While in command of a Patrol of the 2nd Battalion, Essex Regiment, on the 24th of September, to the south of Vregny, made a valuable reconnaissance through a thick wood, reaching a point 150 yards from the enemy's trenches.” He was tragically, and accidentally, killed when hit by a round from a Very [flare] pistol during a squadron party, presumably at Le Hameau aerodrome.
