George Herbert Boltwood was born in Wormley, Hertfordshire on 28th August 1890, baptised on 7 December 1890 at Wormley, Herts, son of William Boltwood and Rosa Harriet (nee Roll/Woods). William was Rosa’s second husband, her first husband Henry Woods died in 1887. George was one of five children born to William and Rosa, although one died in infancy.

1891 Census records George aged 7 months, living with his parents, brothers William (3), Alfred (2), stepsister Rosa Woods (11), Stepbrothers Henry Woods (12), James Woods (11) and Robert (7), in, Pleasant Place, High Road, Wormley, Herts. The family had a lodger, George Warney.

George attended St. Marys Infant School, Cheshunt and Dewhurst Endowed Boys School, Cheshunt.

1901 Census records George aged 9, living with his parents, Stepbrother James, and his three brothers at, 2, Diamond Villas, Cromwell Avenue, Cheshunt, Herts.

1911 Census records George working as a tomato grower, living with his mother and brother Walter. The head of the household is Robert Woods his stepbrother at, 44, Prospect Road, Cheshunt, Herts.

Wartime Service

On his enlistment George was posted to the Duke of Cambridges Own (Middlesex Regiment) with the service number 8632, initially with the 11th Battalion, later transferred to the 23rd Battalion.

He landed in France in August 1915, saw action on the Western Front and he died on 27th May 1917, from wounds received in action.

Additional Information

His effects of £6-18s-7d, Pay Owing and a War Gratuity of £10, went to his father William.

His younger brother Private 331041 Walter Charles Boltwood was killed in action on 1st September 1918, and elder brother Private 13418 Alfred Boltwood survived the war.
