Bushey Town Memorial, St Peter’s Church Memorial, Bushey Heath

Born in Bushey on 28 September 1895, Frederick Harris was the eldest child of James and Eleanor (née Steeden) Harris, who lived at 181 Sparrows Herne, Bushey. He was baptised at St Peter’s, Bushey on 28, June 1896. His parents were married on 21, August 1893 at St Peter’s Church, Bushey.

At the 1901 Census, the family was living at Clay Hill, Bushey. James (age 37) was employed as a carman and that for Eleanor (age 32) as a laundress. They have two children; 6-year old Frederick and his 2-year old sister, Jessie.  The birthplace for James and the two children is recorded as Bushey Heath and that for Eleanor as St John’s Wood.

At the 1911 Census, they were still living in Bushey but had moved to 179, Sparrows Herne.  James is not present and Eleanor is recorded as the head of the household. She is age 40 and is working as a Laundry Ironer and sixteen-year-old Frederick is also a Laundry Labourer. Also present are Frederick’s sisters, Jessie (age 12) and Daisy (age 9), together with his 86-year old grandmother, Ann Sidwell. Her birthplace is given as Chorley Wood.

Wartime Service

Frederick enlisted at Mill Hill as Private 7215 in the Middlesex Regiment. He served with the 1st Battalion in France and Flanders and was killed in action, age 20, on 16 March 1915.

He is remembered with honour at Y Farm Military Cemetery, Bois-Grenier in France and is also commemorated on the Bushey Memorial and at St Peter’s Church, Bushey Heath.

Additional Information

Frederick’s pension record card gives his mother, Eleanor, as his dependant, living at 181, Sparrows Hearne, Bushey. She was awarded a pension of two shillings a week from 30 May 1916.
