Born on 20 Jan 1875 in Waltair, Madras, India son of George Duncan Irvine (I.C.S.) and Mrs. Emily Gertrude (Maguire) Irvine. Educated at Haileybury College 1888, Clifton College and the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich. Gazetted 2nd Lieutenant R.E. on 15 Mar 1895, promoted Lieutenant 15 Mar 1898, Captain 1 Apr 1904 and Major 30 Oct 1914. Served on the North-West Frontier, Waziristan 1901-2 and in Bangalore until Jul 1913 when he was appointed General Staff Officer, 3rd Grade with the Australian Forces. Lived later in Sydney, Australia. He married Emily Marion McGann at Brompton Oratory, London on 23 Oct 1906 and had one son.

Wartime Service

At the outbreak of war, he was Brigade Major, 1st Infantry Brigade, A.I.F. He landed at Gallipoli on 24 Apr 1915 and was shot by a sniper at Gaba Tepe.
