Pre War

Ernest was born on 6 October 1893 in Hertford and baptised on 17 Dec 1893 in St Andrew’s Church, Hertford son of Frederick and Bertha Phyllis and living in 47 Hertingfordbury Road, Hertford in 1901 and at number 45 in 1911. In both his father was recoded as working as/at whitesmiths, (bike smiths and cycle agent) and in 1911 Ernest was working with his father. Sadly Bertha died in childbirth in 1911. At that time she and Frederick had seven living children.

Ernest married Lena Brown in Hatfield in 1916 and was living in Hatfield when he enlisted.

Officially recorded as born in St Albans and was living in Hatfield when he enlisted in in St Albans.

Wartime Service

Ernest was Lance Corporal 438 in the Household cavalry and Cavalry of the Line (incl. Yeomanry and Imperial Camel Corps), but was also recorded as formerly 3700 2nd Life Guards.

The Bishop’s Hatfield Parish Magazine of October 1917, recorded: “Much sympathy is also felt for the young widow of Ernest Hawthorne after so short a married life."

Awarded the British War Medal & Victory Medal.

Additional Information

His pension records show that his widow was living at 5 Glebe Cottages, Hatfierld, Herts after Ernest’s death.


Hatfield Parish Council, Souvenir Committee Ledger:  Mrs Hawthorne (Widow) of 5 Glebe Cottages, Hatfield received an “In Memoriam and Roll of Honour Album.
