Pre War
Born on the 29th March 1885 and was baptised in May that year, he was the son of Charles & Elsie Reed of 46 Cambridge Road.
In June 1908 he married Sarah Anne Reed and they lived at 70 Cambridge Road, Sawbridgeworth. They had two children, Edward Arthur (born 1910) and Ernest George (born 1913) . Edward enlisted in the Hertfordshire Regiment on the 1st October 1914.
Wartime Service
He enlisted before 4th November 1914 with his brother George - just two service numbers apart.
After just 99 days service, and 1st January 1915, Edward was brought before a medical board who declared him unfit for service due to Tuberculosis*1. He was discharged from service on the 1st January 1915, because the Silver War Badge had not yet been instituted he received no official acknowledgement of his service. Edward died a few months later as a result of his condition, which was not attributed to war service, which explains why he is missing from CWGC records. He was 30 years old.
It is not know where he is buried, but is seems likely that is was at Great St. Mary’s churchyard.
Additional Information
*1 Edward does not appear in the CWGC records. His brother, Charles and cousin Albert also died.
