His father was a carpenter and the family were living on the Nyn Park estate Northaw. The family later moved to Lincolnshire and he was educated at Northaw, Mareham-le-Fen and Horncastle.
He emigrated to Canada 1909 where he took up farming in Saskatchewan. He attested in Canada 7th June 1915.
Wartime Service
He returned to England with the 32nd Battalion Canadian Contingent and fought with the Canadian Expeditionary Force in France from early 1916 and was killed in action east of Hendecourt-les-Cagnicourt. He was buried in the Upton Wood Canadian Cemetery near Arras.
A comrade wrote “Hubert was a gallant boy, he was admired by everyone; always with a happy smile and a cheery word, no matter what the difficulty or danger; always ready to help and effusing to take the credit for anything he did, and was the finest example of a hero and soldier that I have met.”
