Bertie Shadbolt was born in 1894 in Tewin, Nr Welwyn, Herts, the son of Arthur and Elizabeth Shadbolt, and baptised there on 30 December 1894. On the 1901 Census the family were living at Lower Green, Tewin where his father was working as a Garden Labourer - not domestic.


By 1911 they were living at Haines Cottages, Tewin, and Bertie was a farm labourer.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Welwyn and served with the 7th Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment in France from 26 July 1915.


He was wounded in action during the Battle of the Somme and repatriated to England for treatment. He died of his wounds in hospital in Southampton, Hampshire (probably Netley Hospital) on 15 July 1916, aged 22 and is buried in Tewin (St Peter) Churchyard, Herts.

His grave (not CWGC) also records his brother's death. Their inscription reads:

IN LOVING MEMORY OF BERT, THE BELOVED SON OF ARTHUR AND ELIZABETH SHADBOLT, WHO DIED FROM WOUNDS RECEIVED ON ACTIVE SERVICE WITH THE 7TH BEDS. REGIMENT IN FRANCE JULY 15TH 1916, AGED 22 YEARS.

ALSO IN LOVING MEMORY OF WALTER SHADBOLT, BROTHER OF THE ABOVE, KILLED IN ACTION IN FRANCE JULY 31ST 1917, AGED 30 YEARS.
FAITHFUL UNTO DEATH

His mother received a war gratuity of £8 10s and pay owing of £10 17s 8d, She also received a pension of 5 shillings a week.
