Arthur Herbert Walters was born on 3rd March 1886, in Goffs Oak/Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, son of John Thomas Walker a, Domestic Gardener, and Rachel Walters (nee Thomas). One of six children although three died in childhood.
He was Baptised on 18th April 1896, in the Parish Church, Cheshunt, Herts, at the time the family were living at Brickfields, Blindmans Lane, Cheshunt, Herts.
1891 Census records Arthur aged 5 living with his parents, and sister Gertrude (6) at, 2 Claremont Lodge, Goffs Lane, Cheshunt, Herts.
Arthur attended St Marys Infants school, Cheshunt, from April 1891 to June 1893, from there to Dewhurst Endowed Boys school, Cheshunt. The family later moved to Goffs Oak, Herts.
1901 Census, Arthur (14), sister Louisa (13) and brother Leonard (2) and his parents are now living in Goffs Oak, Herts.
Arthur married Lizzie/Elizabeth Twyford of Berkhamsted, Herts, the daughter of David and Nancy Ann Twyford, in late 1910, the marriage was registered in Edmonton, Middx. They went on to have two children, Gertrude Violet born 1911 and Winifred Gladys born 1916.
1911 Census records Arthur as married to Lizzie, they have no children and are living at 42 Albury Grove Road, Cheshunt, Herts, and he is employed as a Nursery Hand.
Wartime Service
Arthur enlisted at Cheshunt, posted to the East Surrey Regiment with the service number 33658, on completion of his training he was sent to France, see action on the Western Front, he was Killed in Action on 18th August 1917, aged 31 years. He is buried in the Hooge Crater Cemetery, Zillebeke, Belgium. Grave Ref: IXA. E6.
His death is mentioned in the War diaries of The 9th Battalion East Surrey Regiment.
Additional Information
Lizzie/Elizabeth received a widow’s pension of £1-02s-11d, a week from 4th March 1918, it was increased to £1-16s-08d, a week from 1st May 1918, and his effects of £2-3s-7d, pay owing and his war gratuity of £3.
His Headstone inscription “GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN” was requested by, Mrs. E. Walters, Oak Cottages, Goffs Oak, Cheshunt, Herts. His widow.
In June 1997 Broxbourne Borough Council received a suggestion from the Chairman of Goffs Oak Community Association to name roads to commemorate the men who lost their lives in the two world wars that are displayed on the Goffs Oak War Memorial. It was decided that these names should be used for the large development in Hammond Street Road This soldier was one of them, Walters Close is named in memory of him.
