Pre War
Alfred Charles Morris was born in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire on 12th January 1898, son of Lee or Leigh Morris a, Beer Retailer and Elizabeth (Springham) Morris. One of five children although two died in infancy.
1901 Census records Alfred aged 2, living with his parents, sister Beatrice (4) and brother Sidney (1 month) in, Clay Lane Sawbridgeworth, Herts. His father is recorded as a Beer Retailer.
1911 Census records Alfred aged 12, at school part time, living with his parents, sister Beatrice (13) also a school part time, and brother Reginald (6) at, 3 Kent Cottages, Brookfield Lane, Cheshunt, Herts. His father is now employed as a Stoker at a Nursey. They have a boarder Nile Nillson a Gardener.
Wartime Service
Alfred travelled to the County Town of Hertford to enlisted, posted to “The Queens” (Royal West Surrey Regiment) with the service number G/63609. On completion of his training, he was sent to the Western Front.
Alfred died of wounds received in action, probably at a casualty Clearing Station at, Lijssenthoek on 25th October 1918, aged 20, he is buried in the Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, in Belgium.
Additional Information
His mother received a Dependents Pension of 5/- a week from 6th November 1919.
His effects of £10-00-09, pay owing and his war gratuity of £7, went to his father Lee.
The Headstone inscription “WE MOURN THE LOST WHO DIED A HERO FOR HIS COUNTRY’S SAKE“ was requested by his father Lee, who was living at 1 Bryngwyn Cottages, Mill Lane, Cheshunt, Herts.
