We Believe this to be the R. W. Coxall on the Cheshunt Memorials.


Robert William Coxall was born at High Beech, Essex, in 1882, son of Robert William Coxall a, Domestic Gardener and Jane Maria Coxall (nee Whiting). The eldest of three children although one died in infancy.


He was Baptised at St. Paul Church, High Beech, Essex, on 18th December 1892.


1901 Census records Robert Jr, aged 8, living with his parents and brother Harry (5) at, 153 High Street, Cheshunt, Herts.


1911 Census records Robert Jr. (18), working as a Garden Nursery Hand, living with his parents and brother Harry (15) at, “The Lodge” Woodgreen Park, Cheshunt, Herts.

Wartime Service

Robert Jr. enlisted in the 1st Battalion, Grenadier Guards, with the service number 18093, (his service number indicates he enlisted between Sept & Oct 1914).


He arrived in France on 16th March 1915, for service on the Western front. He was killed in action between 15th & 18th May 1915. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial to the missing in France.  

Additional Information

His mother Jane Coxall received a dependents pension of 5/- a week from 6th November 1918. His effects of £5-5s-3d, Pay Owing and his War gratuity of £3, went to his father Robert Coxall.
