Sidney Joseph was born on 29 Apr 1899 (baptised 29 May 1899) in Little Amwell to Joseph Cox, a labourer, and Mary Ann (nee Pratt).


On the 1901 Census Sidney was living at Mount Pleasant, Little Amwell with his parents and elder brother Ernest. On the 1911 Census Sidney and his parents were living at 9 Church Terrace, Little Amwell.

Wartime Service

Sidney enlisted in the Hertfordshire Regiment as a Territorial as a Private 3843 (this serial number was issued 4 Nov & 13 Dec 1914).


At some time he was transferred to 1st Battalion Bedfordshire Regiment and in 1917 he became Private 266157 when the Territorial Force was renumbered. As no Service Record has been found for Sidney his movements are not certain but 1st Bedfordshires were present at the Somme 1916, Arras 1917, and Passchendaele 1917 and in Aug 1918 they were present at the Battle of Bapaume. Sidney is recorded as being wounded (Gunshot Wound Right Thigh) and being treated at 14 Field Ambulance on 2 Sep 1918. He died of wounds on 3 Sep 1918.

Additional Information

His mother, Mrs M Cox 9, Church Terrace, Hertford Heath, Hertford, ordered his headstone inscription: "FAITHFUL UNTO DEATH". War Gratuity of £18 and arrears of £6 4s 0d was paid to his mother.
