Pre War
Arthur William John Spillett was born in 1899, in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, son of Arthur Spillett a Labourer and Ada Jessie Spillett (nee King). The second of nine children although one died in infancy.
1901 Census records Arthur Jr. aged 1, living with his parents, and sister Emily (2) at, 12 Backway, Waltham Abbey, Essex.
1911 Census, Arthur Jr. aged 12, is at school, living with his parents, six sisters and brother, Edward (6), still at, 12 Backway, Waltham Abbey, Essex. The family had a boarder Harry King (28). (Possibly Ada’s brother).
Wartime Service
Arthur Jr. enlisted at Epping, Essex, posted to The Queen’s (Royal West Surrey Regiment) issued with the service number G/70128.
On completion of his training Arthur Jr. was sent to France, seeing action on the Western Front. He was Killed in action on 9th October 1918, aged 19, he has no known grave, he is commemorated on the Vis-En-Artois Memorial in France, to the missing. Panel 3.
Additional Information
His effects of £9-17s-01d, pay owing and his war gratuity of £7-10s-00d, went to his mother Ada Spillett.
