Bernard Stanley Cox was born in 1882, in Kings Langley, Hertfordshire, son of Arthur Cox (1858 – 1936) and Charlotte Cox (1853 – 1931) (nee Joiner). One of four children, one died in infancy, Alfred (B 1879), and Rose (B 1885).
He was Baptised on 26th March 1882, in the Parish Church, Kings Langley, Herts.
1891 Census records Bernard aged 9, at school, living with his parents, and two siblings, in The Common, Kings Langley, Herts. His Grandmother Hannah Joiner was also living with the family.
1901 Census records Bernard aged 19, working as a Clerk at the local Paper Mill, living at home with his parents and two siblings, at 6, The Common, Kings Langley, Herts.
Bernard married Lois Kate Sheppard the daughter of Edwin and Mary Sheppard in Hendon, London, in 1905.
1911 Census records Bernard as married to Lois, they have three children Madge 5, Bernard 2, and Leslie 6 months, the family are living at The Common, Kings Langley, Herts, and Bernard is a Foreman at the local Cardboard Factory.
A fourth child was born in 1914, Denis Alfred Cox.
Wartime Service
Bernard enlisted at Watford, Herts, in the Royal Flying Corps in July 1916, with the service number 39026. In November of 1916.
He arrived on the Western Front, attached to the “Kite Balloon Section” on Observation Duties. In September 1917, he was transferred to the 10th Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment with the service number 42214.
He was Killed in Action at Kemmel Ridge on 17th April 1918. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial to the missing in Belgium. Panel 35 to 37
Additional Information
The value of his effects was £2-16s-7d, Pay Owing and £7-10s-0d, War Gratuity which went to his widow Lois Kate Cox.
Lois received a widows Pension for herself and the four children of 36/8 a week from 6th November 1918.
The front cover of his Royal Flying Corps, Attestation papers was found.
