Pre War

Son of James and Susannah Maria (nee YOUNG) COWARD.

His parents married 1885 in the Tonbridge, Kent, district.  James died 1904 in the Southampton, Hants, district aged 60; Susannah died 1948 in the Eton, Bucks, district aged 92.

George was born 1889 in the Holborn, London, district, and resided in Binfield, Berks.

On the 1891 Census, aged 1 he lived in Watford, with his parents and four siblings.  On the 1901 Census, aged 11 he lived in Prittlewell, Essex, with his father and three siblings.  On the 1911 Census, a Private in the 1st Loyal North Lancashire Regiment aged 21, he was stationed at Bhurtpore Barracks, South Tidworth, Hants.

Wartime Service

He re-enlisted in Reading, Berks; was entitled to the Victory, British War and 1914-15 Star medals, his qualifying date being 30 May 1915; and was killed in action.  

Additional Information

Unfortunately, George’s W.W.1 Service Record appears to be one that did not survive the World War Two bombing.
