Bushey Town Memorial, St James’ Church Memorial, Bushey

Pre War

Born in Havant, Hampshire in 1892, William Couzens was the eldest son in a family of eight children of William and Emma Couzens. The Couzens were agricultural labourers and brick makers.


In about 1898, William moved with his growing family to 8, Wright’s Cottages in Acton, Middlesex, where he found employment as a red brick moulder.


The family moved again in about 1903, this time to Hertfordshire where they settled at 66 Rosebery Road, Bushey. By 1911, William was 19 and was working as a baker.

Wartime Service

William enlisted in Hammersmith as Private G/1110 with the Queen’s Royal West Surrey Regiment, serving with the 2nd Battalion, and was killed in action on the Western Front on 16 May 1915, aged 23.


He is remembered with honour at Le Touret Memorial in northern France and is commemorated on the Bushey Memorial and at St James’ Parish Church.
