Pre War

William Hugh COULTER was born on 16th June 1891, in Darjeeling, West Bengal, India, son of Dr. William Coulter and Kate Coultier, (nee Saunders). Their only son.


He was baptised on 25th July 1891, at St Michaels Church, Darjeeling, West Bengal, India.


1901 Census records William Jr. aged 9, a boarder at Tyttenhanger Lodge, Boarding School, London Colney, Herts. From there William Jr. went to Charterhouse School, Godalming, Surrey from 1905 to 1909. William Jr. entered the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst, as a Cadet, he was commissioned into the 5th (Royal Irish) Lancers, as 2nd Lieutenant on 7th February 1912.


His father Dr. William Coulter died on 22nd April 1912, he is buried in Hatfield Road Cemetery, St Albans, Herts.

Wartime Service

On the outbreak of war, the Regiment was stationed in Dublin, they were mobilized for war and left on 15th August 1914, aboard the “SS Kingstonian” landing at Le Havre, France, on 19th August 1914. He was promoted to Lieutenant on 26th October 1914.


In February 1915, William Jr. was in the trenches near Ypres in Belgium, when he was Killed in Action on 22nd February 1915, aged 24. He is buried in Ypres Town Cemetery. Grave G. 5.


He was mentioned in Sir John French’s dispatches. 

Additional Information

His effects of £22-05s-00d pay owing and his war gratuity of £40, went to his mother Kate Coulter.


He was a member of the Subaltern’s Regimental Polo Team and a good all-round sportsman.
