Pre War
Arthur born in Hatfield around 1897, the son of Henry Edward Stallan a Labourer and Eliza Stallan (nee Sudell). One of their seven children although one died in infancy.
1901 Census records Arthur (4) , living with his parents, Sister Alice (15), brothers, Henry (10), William (7) and Albert 2, at 13 Roe Green Cottages, Chantry Lane, Hatfield, Herts.
The 1911 census: Arthur was 14, was living with his parents, four brothers Henry (20), William (17), Albert (12) and Geoffrey (8), at 1 Cecil Cottages, Roe Green, Hatfield. His father, William, Albert and Arthur are all Farm Labourers, brother Henry is a Railway Porter.
The Soldiers Died In The Great War database records that he was born and living in Hatfield when he enlisted there.
Wartime Service
After enlistment he became Private 265398, Hertfordshire Regiment.
The Bishop Hatfield Parish Magazine of September 1914, in the list of men mobilised from Hatfield, recorded: “Stallon, Arthur, Roe Green, Territorials.” and in June 1918: “Roe Green again suffered seriously ... While Mr Stallan has lost a third son Pte. Arthur Stallan, only a month after the death of Pte William Stallan. His other son Sergt. H. Stallan, DCM having recently been wounded.”
The Herts Advertiser dated 15.6.1918, reported: “Hatfield Family’s third Loss - Pte Arthur Stallon, Herts. Regt., son of Mr Stallon and the late Mrs Stallon of Hatfield was killed in action on April 10th, 1918. He sailed for France in November 1914and acted as groom to the late Colonel Page until May, 1917 when he came home to England suffering from sceptic poisoning, he returned to France again in January 1918. Before joining up he was employed on the Marquis of Salisbury’s estate, Hatfield. Mr Stallon has lost two other sons in the war. Pte William Stallon, Beds Regt., killed in action on April 4th 1918 and Pte Albert Stallon, Lincoln Regt who died of gas poisoning on October 11th 1917. Another brother, Sergt. Henry Stallon DCM Beds Regt., has been wounded and is at present in hospital in this country. Driver Wood, Son-in-law is now serving in France."
