Born on 26 Apr 1882 and baptised on8 Jul 1882 in Dalhousie, Bengal, India son of Lt. Col. James Philip Sparling (Indian Army) and Lucy Mary (Ryan) Sparling. Educated at the United Services College 1892-95, Fettes College 1895-1900 and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst 1901. Formerly commissioned 2nd Lieutenant Norfolk Regiment on 18 Jan 1902 and then transferred and promoted to Lieutenant 57th Rifles (Indian Army) in 1904. He served on the North-West Frontier in 1908 where he was wounded and was promoted to Captain on 18 Jan 1911.

Wartime Service

He was appointed Major Royal Marines in Feb 1915. He was killed in action at Gallipoli.

Brother of Major Norman Chalmers Sparling who was killed in action on 25 Sep 1915 and is also commemorated on this memorial. United Services College, Westward Ho, Devon amalgamated with Imperial Service College in Windsor in 1912 and then moved to Haileyb
