William Reginald CORNHILL was born in Broxbourne, Hertfordshire, in late 1892, the son of James Cornhill a General Labourer and Harriett Cornhill (nee Cutts). One of nine children.
1901 Census records William as Willie aged 8, at school, living with his parents, brothers Herbert (20), Leonard (18), Arthur (13) and sister Daisy (10) at 7 The Avenue, Hoddesdon, Herts.
1911 Census records William aged 18, employed as a Domestic Coachman, living with his parents at 10 High Street, Hoddesdon, Herts.
Wartime Service
William enlisted at Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, initially with the 9th (Queens Royal) Lancers and issued with the service number 3352. Later transferred to the 9th Squadron, Machine Gun Corps (Cavalry), and issued with the new service number 51900.
William was wounded in action and admitted to No.3 Australian General Hospital at Abbeville, France, where he died of his wounds on 29th March 1918, he is buried in Abbeville Communal Cemetery Extension, Abbeville, France. Grave Ref: II. B. 27.
Additional Information
His effects of £12-01-11, pay owing and his war gratuity of £16-10-00, went to his father James Cornhill.
Brother of Private Herbert Charles Cornhill who died of wounds on 22 Apr 1918 and of Private Arthur John Cornhill who was killed in action on 18 Nov 1916 and who are also commemorated on these memorials.
