Pre War

Born on 19 Aug 1867 in Aston Hall, Newport, Shropshire son of Henry and Henrietta Jane (King) Corbett. Educated at Haileybury College 1881-84.


He married Elise Gwendoline Massey of "St. Albans," Sunningdale, Berks in Ambala, India in Dec 1893. Gazetted 2nd Lieutenant on 10 Nov 1888, Lieutenant 25 Jun 1890, Captain 28 Feb 1897 and Major on 19 Nov 1904. Served in India in the Tirah Expedition 1897-98 and in South Africa 1900-02.

Wartime Service

The battalion landed at Boulogne in France on 16 Aug 1914. He was killed in action during the second battle of Ypres.

Major Charles Harold Corbett, 18 hussars (QMO) also has a memorial on the wall in St Andrew’s church, Church Aston, Newport, Shropshire. His family live a few yards away.
