Pre War

Son of Richard and Clementina (nee SMEDOWICK) COPAS. His parents married 22 June 1881 at St Paul’s, Southport, Lancs. Clementina died 1919 in the Leicester district aged 60; Richard died 1935 in the Billesdon, Leics, district aged 82.


Harold was born 1893 in Southport, and was baptised 1 October 1893 at St Peter’s, Birkdale, Lancs.  He resided in Watford.


On the 1901 Census, aged 7 he lived in Leicester, with his parents and three siblings.  On the 1911 Census, a shop assistant aged 17, he still lived in Leicester, with his mother and one sibling.


Recorded as born in Southport and was living in Watford when he enlisted in Bedford.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Bedford; was entitled to the Victory and British War medals, and was killed in action during an unsuccessful attack at Hangard.  

Additional Information

Unfortunately, Harold’s Service Record appears to be one that did not survive the World War Two bombing.
