Pre War

William Coot was born in 1880 in Markyate (baptised 17 Mat 1892) to William Henry Coot, farm Labourer, and Susan (nee Bond).

On the 1891 Census the family of parents, William, James (born 1883) and Charles (born 188) were living in Flamstead.

On the 1901 Census the family of parents, William & James, both labourers on Threshing Machine, Charles and Caroline E (born 1892) were living at Pye Corner, Flamstead.

On the 1911 Census the family of parents, William, a farm labourer, Charles and (Caroline) Emily were living at Pye Corner, Flamstead.

Wartime Service

No Service Record was found for William. Other records shown that William was enlisted as in the Bedfordshire Regiment as Private 29359 and at some time he was transferred to 8th (Service) Battalion of the Northamptonshire Regimen as Private 46870. William may have been with the 8th Battalion during the Battles of 1918 against the German Spring Offensive:- Actions of the Somme Crossings (24-25 Mar), Rosiers (26- 27 Mar), and Avre (4 Apr).  William may have been wounded in this last action, he died from his wounds on 24 Apr 1918 at 4 General Hospital, St Omer.


Military records use the family name as Coote whereas civilian records use Coot.

Additional Information

War Gratuity of £9 and arrears of £10 0s 10d was paid to his father.
