Pre War
Walter Coote was born in Newport/Henham, Essex, (depending on the document) in 1893, son of Walter Coote a Horse keeper on a Farm and Elizabeth Coote (nee Saville). One of eight children although one died in infancy.
1901 Census record Walter Jr. aged 7, living with his parents and four siblings at, 213 High Street, Cheshunt, Herts.
1911 Census, Walter Jr. (17) is working as a General Labourer, living with his parents and five siblings at, 15 Chilton Cottages, Swanfield Road, Waltham Cross, Herts. His Grandparents John & Mary Saville and his uncle Frederick Saville are also living with the family.
Wartime Service
Walter enlisted at Cheshunt, Herts, on 12th December 1915, posted to the Army Reserve the following day the 13th. Mobilized for War service on 4th February 1916, with the 4th Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment, with the service number 25969.
He was transferred to the 3rd Battalion, The Loyal North Lancashire Regiment, with the service number 23468, on 26th June 1916. He arrived in France on 1st July 1916, and on to Base Camp at Etaples on 2nd July, joining the 9th Battalion in the field.
He was posted missing, presumed killed in action on 14th July 1916. Just 14 days after arriving in France. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial to the missing on the Somme, France
Additional Information
His effects of £2-9s-1d, Pay Owing and his War Gratuity of £3, went to his Father Walter Coote. The CWGC record his age as 33, this should be 23.
