Pre War

Walter William Cooper was born on 5 March 1886 in Northchurch, Herts, the son of William and Emily Cooper, and was baptised on 17 June 1886 at Berkhamsted. He was one of eight children. 


On the 1891 Census the family were living at 10 Station Road, Berkhamsted, where his father was working as a plumber. They remained at the same address in 1901 at which time Walter was working as a house painter. 


On the 1911 Census he was listed as a Police Constable living at the Police Station, 60 Minories, St Botolph, London 


He married Elsie May Hancock on 3 June 1917 at Great Berkhamsted and they had a daughter Margaret born 25 April 1919. 

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Stratford, Middlesex, and joined the Military Police Corps & Military Foot Police at Calais, serving in France from 27 July 1915. He was initially appointed as Lance Corporal, eventually rising to Sergeant. 


He died on 2 January 1919 from a perforated duodenal ulcer, aged 32, and is buried in Les Baraques Military Cemetery, Sangatte, France. 

Additional Information

His widow received  a war gratuity of £24 and two payments of pay owing totalling £21 11 10d. She also received a pension of  £1 2s 11d a week.
