Wartime Service

He was originally a Corporal in “E” Company, the Hertfordshire Regiment, and transferred to the Bedfordshire Regiment in January 1915. He was promoted to Sergeant in January 1916 and was posted to France in July of that year.


He was killed on the closing day of the Battle of the Somme, after being shot in the head whilst leaving an attack on Beaumont Hamel.

Additional Information

George  is also commemorated on his family’s grave in Royston Church Additional Burial Ground. His part of the inscription reads:

And of
SERGT. INSTR. GEORGE COOTE, SON OF THE ABOVE [Joseph & Susan Coote] KILLED IN ACTION BEAUMONT HAMEL, FRANCE,
NOVR. 13TH 1916 AGED 29 YEARS
