William Charles Smith was born in Bishop's Stortford in 1884 to Walter and Rhoda Smith.
On the 1891 Census the family were living at Wood End Green, Henham, Essex where his father was a carpenter. By the 1901 Census the family were living at Barrells Down, Bishop's Stortford and William was working as a domestic gardener. He married Margaret Emily Banks in 1908 in Saffron Walden, Essex and they had a son Ronald William in 1909. On the 1911 Census he was living with his wife and son at 30 George Green at Great Hallingbury and working as a domestic gardener.
Wartime Service
He enlisted in Bishop's Stortford and initially served in the Bedfordshire Regiment, later transferring to the Leicestershire Regiment.
He was killed in action in France.
Additional Information
His sister Annie M (sole legatee) received a war gratuity of £11 10s. and pay owing of £7 18s 8d.
