Pre War

Thomas Smith was born in 1892, in Hunton Bridge, Langleybury, Hertfordshire, son of William Smith, a Cowman, and Elizabeth Hannah Smith. The youngest of six children. Baptised on 14 August 1892, in the Parish of Langleybury, Herts.


1901 Census records Thomas aged 8, living with his parents, brothers William (20), Arthur (10), and sister Elizabeth (14), in, Hunton Bridge, Langleybury, Herts.


1911 Census records Thomas aged 18, working as a House Painter, living at home with his parents, and brother Arthur, in, Hunton Bridge, Langleybury, Herts.


Thomas married Nellie Beatrice George, the daughter of Henry and Annie George of Chipperfield, Herts, in late 1914. We believe they had one son Ronald Thomas Smith born in 1916.

Wartime Service

Thomas enlisted at Bedford, Beds, posted to the London Regiment with the service number 8396. Later transferred to the Royal Irish Rifles, with the service number 45165.


He was Killed in Action on 7 December 1917, at the Battle of Cambrai, (20 November to 7 December 1917). He has no known grave; he is commemorated on the Cambrai Memorial to the fallen in France.

Additional Information

Nellie received a widows pension of 20/5, a week from 1 July 1918. Her address was Hillbrow, Meggs Lane, Chipperfield, Herts.
