Henry was born on the 9th February 1887 in Bayford, Hertfordshire. The Son of Henry and Ellen Cooledge. He was Baptised on the10th April 1887 in Bayford, Hertfordshire.
The 1891 census shows Henry aged 4 years living with his Parents, 4 Brothers and 2 Sisters, at Bayford Hall Cottages, Bayford, Hertfordshire. He attended the Bayford National School from 1891 to 1896. The 1901 census shows Henry aged 13 years living with his Parents, 2 Brothers and 2 Sisters, at 3 Hope Cottage, Essendon, Hertfordshire.
On the 23rd February 1904 aged 17 years 11 months he enlisted into the 4th Battalion Bedfordshire Regiment, with the service number 4882. On the 14th March 1904 he was medically discharged due to him having flat feet. He then enlisted into the 1st Battalion the Coldstream Guards, no other details are available other than he was discharged on the 1st June 1907. His brother Walter served with the Coldstream Guards from 1905 to 1909, then in the reserve 1909 to 1914, Mobilized for war service 1914 to 1919. 1911 census no details found.
Wartime Service
Henry enlisted in Hertford, on the 7th September 1914 into the Bedfordshire Regiment, with the Service Number 3/8096. He was posted to the 8th Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment, on the 12th September 1914, and discharged unfit for service on the 11th November 1914.
Henry then went to High Barnet, Middlesex and enlisted into the 1st/7th Battalion, Duke of Cambridge’s Own, (Middlesex Regiment), with the Service Number TF/5146. He disembarked in France with his Regiment on the 10th November 1915, with the Rank of Lance Corporal. Henry held the Rank of Corporal when he was Killed In Action on the 7th October 1916.
He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial in France.
