Pre War

Alan Welldon Hands Cooke was born in 1886 to mother Mary Louise (Seels) and Alfred Hands Cooke, Headmaster of Aldenham School.


His education included Aldenham School and King College, Cambridge and became a schoolmaster in Leyton, London.

Wartime Service

He was gazetted 2nd Lt 1st Jan 1915, Capt. 24th May 1918.


While with the Worcestershire Regt. at Helles, Gallipoli he was wounded in the foot on 7th Aug 1915, and was in hospital in Alexandria from August 10th to November 1st suffering from his wound, followed by gastritis, and general debility.


He was transferred to 22 Bn. Durham Light Infantry and was killed in action near Monchy in France.

Back pay and gratuities of £204 10s 6d were paid to his father. on 5 Jun 1919 probate awarded another £1509 5s 5d to his father.
