Pre War

Robert David Smith was born in 1892 in Bishop's Stortford to Harriett Smith. His mother married Charles Byatt in 1896. On the 1901 Census he was living with his grandparents Arthur and Mary Ann Smith at Holyfield Road, St Lawrence, Waltham Cross. Although still living with his grandparents on the 1911 Census, they had moved to St Laurence Farm, Long Green, Nazeing, Essex and Robert was working as a farm labourer.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Epping and initially served with the Essex Regiment under Reg. No. 35909, later transferring to the Welsh Regiment. He died of wounds sustained in action. 

Additional Information

His mother received a war gratuity of £3 and pay owing of £3 6s 7d. His grandfather, also called Robert David Smith, was awarded a pension of 6 shillings and six pence a week for life.
