Pre War

Hugh Connell was born in Combios, Northumberland on 25 Nov 1881  (baptised 5 Jan 1882 in Combios) to Robert Marshall Connell, coal miner, and Barbara (nee Patterson).


On the 1881 Census the family of parents, Agnes (born 1860), Mary A (born 1867), Barbara H (born 1874) Robert M (born 1871), Thomas H H (born 1870), Christina (born 1880) were living at Combios Colliery, 3 , Quality Row, Bedlington, Northumberland.


On the 1891 Census the family of parents, Robert M (watchmaker), Barbara H, Thomas M (watchmakers apprentice), Christina and Hugh were living at 3, Quality Row, Combois, Bedlington, Northumberland.


Hugh’s father died on 28 May 1899.


No Record of Hugh was found for the years 1901 and 1911.


On the 1901 Census his mother was living at 22, Middleton Street, Cowpen, Tynemouth with Thomas H H (jeweller) and Christina (grocer).


Hugh married Fanny Kent Clisby (born 1873,Tring) in 1915 and lived at 15, Henry Street, Tring. They had a son, Edward Clisby born 15 Mar 1907.

Wartime Service

.Hugh enlisted at Newcastle on Tyne in the Northumberland Fusiliers as Private 15030 in the 14th (Service) Battalion (Pioneers) as part of 21st Division who trained in the Halton, Tring area before advance parties went to France from  2 Sep 1915, Hugh joining them on 9 Sep 1915. the 14th Battalion were designated Divisional Pioneers and were hurried to the Loos area for the Battle of Loos (25 Sep- 8 Oct 1915).


In 1916 they were engaged in the Battles of the Somme at Albert (1-13 July) and Bazentin Ridge (14-17 July), Hugh was wounded, probably in this last engagement and although treated at No 64 Field Ambulance died on 16 Jul 1916.

Additional Information

War Gratuity of £8 and arrears of 19s 9d was paid to his widow Fanny.
