Pre War

Martin Duggan was born on 16 November 1893 at the Barracks in Ayr, Scotland, the son of Christopher and Ellen (Helen/Nellie) Duggan (nee Warboys). His father was a Sergeant in the Royal Scottish Fusiliers.


On the 1901 Census he was living with his widowed mother at the George and Dragon Public House in Codicote where his uncle was the publican. In 1911 he was boarding with George & Sarah Sams at Flint Cottage, Benington, Herts and working as a Stable Boy.


His mother later lived at 21 Howard Street, Loughborough. 

Wartime Service

Martin enlisted in Whitehall, Middlesex, served in France with the East Yorkshire Regiment from 16 July 1915.


He was was killed in action on 1 July 1916 during the Battle of the Somme.  He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France. 

Additional Information

His mother received a war gratuity of £6 10s and pay owing of £8 18s 2d. She also received a pension of 3s 6d a week. Brother to Christopher Duggan also named on the memorial. N.B. On the Codicote memorial Martin is listed as N Duggan.
