Pre War

Bernard Charles Colyer was born in 1894 in Berkhamsted, the son of Joseph and Eliza Colyer and was baptised on 14 October 1894 in Great Berkhamsted.  He had a young sister Violet who was twelve years his junior. 


On the 1901 Census the family were living at  25 Coles Lane, Sutton Coldfield, Warwickshire where his father was working as a circular sawyer. By 1911 they had moved to 36 Deakin Road, Erdington, Warwickshire and his father was then a greengrocer and milkman and 16 year old Bernard was assisting in the business. 


His parents later lived at Stoke End, Middleton, Nr.Tamworth, 

Wartime Service

Bernard  enlisted in Birmingham and joined the Royal Garrison Artillery, 14th Siege Battery, as a Gunner. 


He died at the 51st Casualty Clearing Station on 12 May 1918, which was then situated at Aire-sur-la-Lys, and is buried in the Aire Communal Cemetery. 


Additional Information

His father received a war gratuity of £3 and pay owing of £8 14s 8d. His mother received a pension of 10s a week.
