Pre War

Alec David Collis was born in Henfield, Sussex in 1888,  the son of Cornelius and Sophia (Sophy) Collis, and was baptised on 17 February 1889 in Henfield. He was one of six children, 


On the 1891 Census the family were living at Boys School House, Henfield, where his father was a certificated school teacher (1st class). They remained in the School House, Henfield Common in 1901 and his mother was also a teacher at that time. 


By the 1911 Census Alec was living as a boarder at the home of Thomas and Alice Finnigan at 30 Ravens Lane, Great Berkhamsted, and working as a certificated teacher. Alec was a teacher at the Victoria Boys' School in Berkhamsted.


He was said to be living in Finsbury Park at the time of enlistment. 


His mother died in 1914 and his father in 1919. 

Wartime Service

Alec joined the 14th Battalion, London Regiment (London Scottish) at the outbreak of war and served in France from 8 March 1915, initially as a Private, but rising to Corporal and Lance Sergeant. 


He was killed in France on 14 October 1915, aged 26, and is buried in Dud Corner Cemetery, Loos, France. 

Additional Information

His brother Cornelius received a war gratuity of £5 and pay owing of £8 3s 1d.
