Pre War

Walter George Collins was born in 1894 in Jackson’s Lane, Reed, Hertfordshire, the son of Daniel and Fanny Louisa Collins (nee Dellow) and one of seven children.


On the 1901 Census the family were living at Jackson's Lane, Reed where his father was working as a thatcher. They remained there in 1911 at which time 17 year old Walter was working as a farm labourer.  

Wartime Service

He enlisted at Hertford and joined the Bedfordshire Regiment, serving with the 2nd Battalion in France from 12 August 1915.


Walter was killed in action on 29 August 1918 and is buried in Combles Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France. 

Additional Information

His father received a war gratuity of £18 10s 10d and pay owing of £21 2s 4d. His mother received a pension of 5 shillings a week.
