Pre War

Born in 1884 in Walworth, London son of Arwid Lionel Beale and Eliza Collins and baptised on 10 Mar 1889 in Whitechapel.


He was living in Whitechapel in 1891 and 1901. Later he lived in Highfields Cottage, Ware, Herts. He married Adelina Annie Kay in 1908 and they lived at The Mount, Great Amwell. He was a bank clerk working in London.

Wartime Service

Enlisted in Hertford 4 Dec 1913. He trained at Luton Hoo and was mobilised on 5 Aug 1914.


He embarked for Egypt on 10 Sep 1914 and was promoted to L/Cpl on 5 Oct 1915 and Cpl on 15 Jan 1916. He returned home on 10 Mar 1916 having contracted tuberculosis and was discharged from the Army on 3 Apr 1916.

Karl is buried in Great Amwell (St. John the Baptist) Churchyard and his headstone bears the inscription:

AGED 35
Karl's brother Arwid who died in Gallipoli is also commemorated on the headstone.
