George was born about 1897 in North Mimms, son William and Elizabeth Smith.


In 1901 the family consisting of William (a railway platelayer), Elizabeth, and children Minnie Elizabeth (11), Herbert William (8) and George who was 4, were living at 61 Bradmore Lane, North Mimms and in 1911 they were recorded as still  in Bradmore Lane. His father was now a foreman platelayer on the railway and family now listed as Elizabeth (wife), Herbert, George and William's mother-in-law, Mary Ann Ray.
