Pre War

Bertie James Collins (known as Bert) was born on 12 April 1897 in Pitstone, Tring, Herts, the son of Frederick and Emma Collins and one of five children. He was baptised on 16 June 1900 in Tring, Herts. 


On the 1901 Census the family were living at Stoke Green, Stoke Poges, Buckinghamshire, where his father was working as a cattleman on a farm. They had moved to 12 Bridge Street, Berkhamsted, by 1911. 

Wartime Service

Bertie enlisted in Hertford and initially joined the 6th Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers (Reg. No. 6781), later transferring to the 1st/4th Battalion, West Riding Regiment.


He died from wounds on 19 December 1916, aged 19, at No. 2 General Hospital, France and is buried in Etaples Military Cemetery, France. 

Additional Information

His mother received a war gratuity of £6 10s and pay owing of £4 11s 5d. Pension cards also exist but given no indication of the amount of pension received.
