Hitchin Town Memorial, St Mary’s Church Roll of Honour (Book), Hitchin
Pre War
He is reputed to have been in the Labour Corps, but a check in the ‘Soldiers died’ database does not identify anyone of this name associated with Hitchin. Unfortunately, the frequency of the name in the ‘Soldiers died’ database’ and the CWGC makes identification difficult. It is possible, indeed likely, that he joined one of the many Labour battalions after becoming unfit for front-line duty through illness, injury or wounding.
Wartime Service
The most probable casualty seems to be Frederick William Smith who enlisted in Blackfriars in Surrey and who was resident in Barnsbury in Middlesex. Initially he had been No. 3984 in the London Rifles, but at the time of his death was No. 98795 and a Private in the l 65th Company of the Labour Corps.
He has no known grave and is remembered on Pier/Face SC on the great Thiepval Memorial to the Missing in France. However, no connection with Hitchin has been established.
