Pre War

Hugh Musk Smith was born in 1892 in Oakham, Rutland to Edward Smith, baker (dealer), and Helen (nee Musk).


On the 1901 census the family of parents, Ethel M (born 1884, school teacher), Hugh M, and Arnold T (born 1896) were living at Penn Street, Oakham, Rutland.


On the 1911 Census Hugh (a baker & confectioner) was a boarder with his married cousin, Kate Smith, a boarding house keeper, at 80, Leicester Street,  Leicester.


Hugh married Annie Beale in Jun 1915, there would be a son Leslie Musk born 1 Jan 1916. They lived at 91, Ridge Avenue, Letchworth, Herts. Resident of Letchworth and enlisted in Hertford.

Wartime Service

No Service Record was found for Hugh. Hugh enlisted probably in late 1916 as Private 32267 in the Bedfordshire Regiment. Following his training he was posted around Jan 1917 to 6th (Service) Battalion of the Regiment which had been in France as part of 112 Brigade, 37 Division since 31 Jul 1915. The division took part in the Battles of the Somme at Ancre (13-18 Nov 1916) before moving to the Arras Sector in 1917 taking part in the Battles of Arras at the 1st Battle of the Scarpe (9-14 Apr 1917). Hugh was wounded in this Battle and although evacuated to No 4 Stationary Hospital at Arques, St Omer he died on 12 Apr 1917.

Additional Information

War Gratuity of £3 and arrears of 19s 11d was paid to his widow, she also received a pension 21s 4d/week for herself and child.
