Pre War

Born in 1885 in Lemsford, Hertfordshire son of Charles and Emma Louisa Smith living in 31 Talbot Street, Hertford in 1901 and in 1 Talbot Street, Hertford in 1911.


He was a grocer, worked for C & J Law, tobacconists in Old Cross, Hertford and then as a salesman and chauffeur mechanic.

Wartime Service

Enlisted at Hertford on 20 Aug 1916, embarked at Avonmouth on 17 Nov 1916 arriving in Basra on 26 Dec 1916 and was killed in action in Mesopotamia.

Additional Information

Brother of Private Bertie Francis Smith who died in Paris on 12 Apr 1919 and is also commemorated on these memorials.


Leonard and his brother Bert are also commemorated on an additional stone vase holder on a grave (prob family) in Hertford (All Saints) Churchyard. Their inscription reads:

MY DEARLY LOVED BROTHERS LEONARD AND BERT SMITH, KILLED IN ACTION 1917 - 1918
