Pre War
Frederick Charles Smith was born in London Colney, Hertfordshire, in the early part of 1900, son of Alfred Josiah Smith a Farm Stockman and Annie Maria Smith (nee Andrews). One of their eight children although two died in infancy.
1901 Census records Frederick aged 1 living with his parent sister Martha (5) and brother Arthur (3), in Napsbury, Herts.
1911 Census, Frederick aged 11, is at school, living with his parents, three brothers and sister Lily (8), in North Mimms, Herts. Brother Alfred Edward Charles Smith was born later that year.
At the time he enlisted he was employed by George Muirhead at Deards End Farm, Knebworth, Herts.
Wartime Service
Frederick travelled to the County Town of Hertford to enlist in April 1918, posted to the Northamptonshire Regiment, with the service No. 58132. On completion of his training, he was sent to the Wester Front. He was killed in Action on 18th September 1918, aged 18, at the time of his death he was serving with “D” Company, 6th Battalion, Northamptonshire Regiment.
His body was recovered from the Battlefield (Map Reference F. 15. B.4.8.) and buried with 19 of his comrades in the Unicorn Cemetery, Vendhuile, France. Grave Ref: I. F. 14.
Additional Information
His effects of £4-12s-04d, pay owing and his war gratuity of £3, went to his mother Annie Smith.
His Headstone inscription: “IN LOVING MEMORY OF OUR DEAR SON KILLED IN ACTION R.I.P.”. was requested by his mother Annie Smith.
